Celebrating the Art of Recycling

14 – 15 March 2020
Waitakaruru Arboretum and Sculpture Park, Tauwhare

Come along to meet three of the foremost artists in New Zealand who create sculptures out of recycled metal. Nathan Hull, Marti Wong, and Adrian Worsley are the featured artists for this weekend at the Sculpture Park with the opportunity to learn about how each of these artists develop their sculptures.
Take the time to walk the 2 km long art-in-nature trail where you will discover more than 100 sculptures and installations all made here in New Zealand. This woodland setting is a former quarry rehabilitated over the past 28 years with more than 20,000 trees planted in what is now a protected forest.

Balloons Over Waikato

Anyone looking skyward around Hamilton in mid-March is likely to be rewarded with the sight of brightly coloured hot-air balloons floating overhead as part of the hugely successful five-day Balloons Over Waikato event. New Zealand’s premier ballooning festival draws balloons, pilots and enthusiasts from around the world, attracted by its meticulous planning, friendly welcome and ideal flying conditions.
More than 130,000 people are set to attend the annual Balloons Over Waikato event and with the Nightglow alone drawing around 80,000.

Turangawaewae Annual Regatta

Turangawaewae Marae, Ngaruawahia

The Turangawaewae Regatta is an integral part of the history of Ngaruawahia and a tradition for New Zealand. It’s the only Maori aquatic carnival of its kind and the only regular event when Waka Tauaa or Maori War Canoes take to the water. This annual event is hosted under the patronage of the Maori King, Kingi Tuheitia with exclusive guided tours of Turangawaewae Marae on offer that are only available during the regatta event. The regatta is an all-day whaanau (family) festival featuring; waka tauaa parade (two appearances 11am and 3pm), kapa haka (Maaori cultural) performances, Waka Kopapa (single hull canoe) racing, traditional kai (food) stalls, craft and education stalls and demonstrations and much more.

Yonex Waikato Badminton International 2020

This exciting international event hosted by Waikato Badminton returns to Hamilton for the second consecutive year. The Yonex Waikato International 2020 is expected to draw a world-class field of athletes from the Waikato and all over New Zealand as they compete for valuable world ranking points to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The event in 2019 attracted a number of Olympians, Commonwealth Games representatives, and World Championship and World Junior Championship medallists and it is hoped that over 100 athletes will again converge in Hamilton in 2020.
